Title 1995 1999 Women's Cross Country Outlook Blue Hen Women Harriers Look to Stay Healthy....Happy With a little bit of luck in the health department, University of Delaware women's cross country head coach Sue McGrath-Powell thinks her 1999 squad can go a long way. The Blue Hens, coming off a sixth place finish at the America East championships a year ago, return a solid cast of eight letterwinners, six of them underclassmen, who hope to move way up in the conference standings. "I'm looking forward to some good running from this group," said McGrath-Powell, who enters her 17th season as head coach having won three conference titles in the last nine years, including the last time in 1995. "We are basically healthy across the board and most are coming off a successful outdoor track season. This could be an exciting year for us and it will be interesting to see how we stack up against the rest of the conference. We are experienced and our runners seem ready to prove themselves. All we have to do is stay healthy." Seniors Caron Marra and Nadia Nashed, two runners who have seen their share of health problems over the years, look ready to make their mark at the conference meet. Marra , a co-captain and one of the top track distance runners in America East, was the Hens' top runner a year ago, leading the Blue Hens in four of the six meets in which she competed, including winning the season-opening Towson Invitational, placing fourth at the Delaware Invitational, and 11th at the Wake Forest Invitational. Injuries sidelined her for the America East championships after she placed 35th at the 1997 league meet. Nashed placed 20th at the America East championships in 1997 but was slowed by injuries and placed 50th at the 1998 championships. Among the top returning underclassmen are sophomore Aimee Alexander, who led all Blue Hen runners with a 22nd place finish as a freshman at the America East championships, sophomore Sarah Johnson (28th at America East), sophomore Jennifer Krisch (32nd at America East), and junior co-captain Katie MacKelcan (52nd at America East). Sophomore Jennifer Crocco and junior Jae Mentzer are also returning letterwinners. Among the talented newcomers McGrath-Powell is anxious to see are sophomores Lisa Kutzing and Monica Marchetta and freshmen Kelli Bloch, Krista Kugler, Diane Monaco, Lauren Palmer, and Cristin Romano. The Blue Hens will compete in seven regular season meets in 1999, including two home Delaware Invitationals and the longest road trip in school history, a visit to the Walt Disney World Classic on Orlando, Fla. in early October. The America East Championships are slated for Oct. 31 at Hartford, Conn.
