NEWARK, DE --- For the second straight week, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country teams captured team titles as the Blue Hens swept the championship at the Delaware Invitational #1 Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

The Blue Hens, who each captured the Hofstra Invitational title to open the season last week, posted the double win again as the Delaware men had the top five individual finishers led by medalist Kyle Schmid to easily outdistance the field and the UD women edged Towson to win that team title.

The Delaware men, who had each of the top 10 individual finishers last week vs. Hofstra, dominated the meet again with 15 points, well ahead of runner-up George Mason with 78 points. UNC Wilmington was third with 83 points followed by Hofstra (94), Stockton (151), Wilmington (DE) College (191), Delaware State (194), Coppin State (211), Lincoln (227), and Morgan State (271).

The Blue Hen women, who won the title despite having just two top 10 finishers, posted 51 points to edge Towson (53) by just two points. UNC Wilmington was third with 63 points followed by Hofstra (64), Morgan State (153), Stockton (165), Delaware State (197), Wilmington (DE) College (242), Lincoln (261), and Coppin State (299).

Schmid, a senior from Lutherville, MD (Towson High School), captured his first career meet title as he covered the eight-kilometer course in 26:12.98, easily defeating teammate and last week’s Hofstra champion P.J. Meany (26:59.06) by a full 47 seconds. Delaware’s Tyler Mayforth was third in 27:03.64 followed by teammates Gregg Cantwell (27:10.07) and Chris Bourke (27;19.43). Delaware’s Mike Zeberkiewicz also placed seventh with a time of 27:22.77.

On the women’s side, Delaware was led by redshirt freshman Christina Antonopoulos (York Suburban/York, PA) who placed fifth overall with a time of 23:58.48 over the six-kilometer course. Also placing in the top 20 for the Hens were Christina’s twin Ioanna Antonopoulos in eighth place (24:38.37), Lindsay Schmiedel (above) in 11th place (25:07.13), Kerrigan Smith in 12th (25:13.12), Megan McGrath in 15th (25:28.38), and Meghan Weaver in 20th (25:54.22).

Towson’s Britta Nelson captured the women’s individual team title in a time of 25:07.13.
