Delaware Women's Cross Country Finishes Eighth at ECAC Championships; Christina Antonopoulos Earns All-East Honors

BRONX, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware women’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the ECAC Championships while the Blue Hen men were 15th at the IC4A Championships as both UD squads concluded their 2008 seasons Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park.

Christina Antonopoulos (at right) led the UD women’s team by finishing in eighth place in the five-kilometer race in 18:19 as she earned All-East honors. The Blue Hens placed eighth out of 11 teams with 188 points, finishing ahead of Duke, Yale and Saint Joseph’s. The eight place finish was the highest for Delaware since the Blue Hens began competing in the ECAC Championships in the 2000 season. Cornell won the women’s title with 67 points, while Harvard was second with 79 points and William & Mary placed third with 87 points.

Yianna Antonopoulos finished 26th for the Blue Hens by crossing the finish line in 18:49, while Jen Watunya was 47th in 19:11 and Karen Mandrachia finished 57th in 19:22. Julia Somers came in 61st place in 19:25, while Liz Paul placed 70th in 19:38 and Lexi Ambrogi was 75th in 19:50.

Kellyn Wright finished 84th in 20:12 for Delaware, while Sophia Kauffman was 87th in 20:16 and Ali Lambert placed 92nd in 20:46. Nicole Cochran of Harvard won the women’s race with a time of 18:04.

The UD men’s team finished 15th out of 15 teams in the IC4A Championships with 307 points. Duke won the title with 48 points, while Duquesne finished second with 87 points and Marist placed third with 102 points.

Nick Pyle was the top finisher for the Blue Hen men as he placed 46th by finishing the five-mile race in 26:09, while Pierce Conlon was 55th in 26:16. Andy Weaver finished 57th in 26:21, while Gregg Cantwell placed 69th in 26:34.

Steve Vincent came in 94th place in 27:03 for Delaware, while Mike O’Brian was 114th in 27:36 and Taylor Hinson came in 115th in 27:40. Nate Parmenter placed 116th in 27:46, while Alex Gambogi finished 119th in 27:56 and Mitch Kastoff was 121st in 28:18. Josh Eddy of Duquesne won the men’s individual title by crossing the finish line in 25:11.
