Christina Antonopoulos, Gregg Cantwell Lead Delaware Harriers at Paul Short Run at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Senior Gregg Cantwell and junior Christina Antonopoulos (at right) were the top finishers for the University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country squads Friday as the Blue Hens competed at the prestigious Brooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh University.

The Delaware women placed 16th out of 43 teams in the six-kilometer race while the Blue Hen men garnered a 22nd place finish out of 45 teams in the eight-kilometer meet. Over 4,000 of the top collegiate and high school runners in the country from over 300 schools competed over 12 difference races during the day.

Delaware will compete again Saturday as the Blue Hens take in the George Mason Invitational at Bull Run Park in Manassas, Va.

Wisconsin captured the men’s team title with 52 points to outdistance runner-up Syracuse, Villanova, Iona, and Cornell in the top five. West Virginia won the women’s team title with 47 points, racing past runner-up Villanova with Baylor, Wisconsin, and Syracuse rounding out the top five.
Liberty’s Sam Chelanga won the men’s race while West Virginia’s Marie-Louis Asselin was the overall winner on the women’s side.

Cantwell (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Ward Melville HS) was the top Hen finisher on the day as he covered the course in 24:48 to place 58th overall. Chris Bourke also cracked the top 100 with an 84th place finish in 25:01 and was followed by Nick Pyle (106th, 25:13), Pierce Conlon (155th, 25:44), Phil Weigel (167th, 25:48), Steve Vincent (215th, 26:26), and Kevin Kemmerle (223rd, 26:33). Cantwell, who missed all but one meet in 2007 season due to injuries, led the team for the third time in his career and for the first time since the 2006 campaign.

Antonopoulos (York, Pa./York Suburban HS) paced the UD women for the seventh time in her career as she covered the course in a time of 21:44 to place 61st overall.

Also for the Hens, Julia Somers was 79th (21:56), Yianna Antonopoulos was 81st (21:56), Liz Paul was 150th (22:49), Lexi Ambrogi finished 158th (22:51), Karen Mandrachia was 168th (23:01), and Jen Watunya came in at 202nd (23:19.
