PRINCETON, N.J. -- The University of Delaware women placed 10th overall and the men finished 14th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships Saturday at Princeton University’s West Windsor Fields.
The Blue Hen women finished 10th for the second time in the last three seasons while the Delaware men placed 14th for their best finish since a 12th place showing in 2005. Georgetown won the men’s team title and Princeton and West Virginia shared the women’s team crown.
Junior Yianna Antonopoulos (at right) led all Blue Hen runners as she placed 36th in the women’s race with a time of 23:00 over the six-kilometer layout. Also for the Hens, Christina Antonopoulos was 43rd (23:20), Julia Somers was 70th (24:02), Karen Mandrachia was 92nd (24:29), Jen Watunya placed 94th (24:31), Liz Paul was 105th (24:49), and Lexi Ambrogi finished 120th (25:14).
Freshman George Vernon led the Delaware men with a 67th place finish with a time of 34:33 over the eight-kilometer course. Also for Delaware, Chris Bourke placed 68th (34:35), Nick Pyle was 69th (34:35), Andy Weaver finished 77th (34:49), Steve Vincent finished 97th (35:22), Gregg Cantwell placed 122nd (36:31), and Pierce Conlon was 125th (36:39).
Andrew Brumbaugh of Georgetown won the men’s individual title with a time of 31:36 while Frances Koons of Villanova was the women’s winner with a clocking of 21:11.
Delaware will close out the 2008 season next Saturday, Nov. 22, when the Hens compete at the ECAC and IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt State Park in New York City.
