Somers Leads Blue Hen Women's Cross Country To Second Place Finish at Delaware Invitational

NEWARK, Del. -- The Blue Hen men’s and women’s cross country teams each finished in second place at the Delaware Invitational held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

Clemson won the men’s title with 19 points, ahead of Delaware with 47, Navy “B” with 65, and Delaware State with 120. The Tigers also captured the women’s title with 27 points, followed by Delaware with 41, Towson with 63, and Delaware State with 119. Rowan won both the men’s and women’s Division II/III races.

Blue Hen junior Chris Bourke led the Delaware men for the second straight week by finishing fourth in the men’s eight-kilometer race in 25:58. Gregg Cantwell was fifth in 26:06, Nick Pyle finished ninth in 26:19, and Pierce Conlon placed 10th after crossing the line in 26:26.

George Vernon came in 19th with a time of 27:23, followed by Rich Pisan who was 20th in 27:30. Kevin Kemmerle finished 21st in 27:32, while Steve Vincent was 22nd in 27:41 and Andy Weaver placed 23rd in 27:45.

UD senior Julia Somers (at right) was the Blue Hen women’s top finisher for the second time in two weeks, as she finished fourth in the five-kilometer race with a time of 18:39. Christina Antonopoulos was fifth with a time of 18:42 for the Blue Hens, while her sister Yianna Antonopoulos placed sixth in 18:46.

Liz Paul came in 11th place in 18:59 for Delaware, while Karen Mandrachia was 17th in 19:38 and Lexi Ambrogi finished 19th in 19:43. Jen Watunya was 21st in 19:45, Sarah Ports placed 22nd in 19:49, Kellyn Wright finished 24th in 19:53, and Jessie Ermak came in 26th in 19:54.

Sam Bryfczynski of Clemson won the men’s race with a time of 25:46, while Jenna Baker of Clemson took the women’s race in 18:27.

Both Blue Hen cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, October 3 when they compete in the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.
