PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The University of Delaware women posted their best team finish in over a decade and Chris Bourke finished 13th overall for the men at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Cross Country Championships Saturday at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
The Blue Hen women placed eighth in the team standings - their best finish since the 1995 team also placed eighth at the meet - while the Delaware men were 13th overall behind Bourke’s finish. The 13th place showing by the UD men was the best for UD since the 2005 season when Delaware finished 12th overall.
The meet included 28 teams on the men’s side and 27 on the women’s involving NCAA Division I schools in Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Georgetown captured the men’s title while Villanova was the winner on the women’s side.
After Georgetown, Villanova was second followed by Saint Joseph, Navy, LaSalle, Princeton, American, Duquesne, Temple, Maryland, Bucknell, Penn, and Delaware. On the women’s side, Villanova was followed by Princeton, West Virginia, Penn State, Georgetown, Maryland, Duquesne, Delaware, Lafayette, and Penn.
Bourke covered the eight-kilometer course in a time of 32:30.9 to lead the Blue Hens with his 13th place finish the best by a UD runner since P.J. Meany was 12th in 2005. Bourke has now led the Hens in four races this season. Also for Delaware, Gregg Cantwell was 52nd (33:41.0), Steve Vincent was 53rd (33:41.2), Andy Weaver was 107th (34:44.4), Nick Pyle was 111th (34:56.8), Kevin Kemmerle was 115th (35:01.5), and Nate Parmenter was 144th (36:02.5). Andrew Bumbalough of Georgetown won the race in 31:41.6.
Julia Somers (at right) led the Blue Hen women with a 35th place finish with a time of 22:36 on the six-kilometer course, the best finish for UD runner since Somers was 34th in 2006. Also for Delaware, Jessie Ermak was 47th (22:52), Katie Deinert was 60th (23:16), Katy Loughran was 87th (23:52), Karen Mandrachia finished 91st (23:56); Sophie Kauffman was 97th (23:59), and Alison Zukowski finished 117th (24:22). Villanova’s Sheila Reid won the race with a time of 20:23.
