Blue Hen Women Win Title; Alexander Places 2nd Overall

 

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's and women's cross country teams captured their own team titles in the Division I race at the Delaware Invitational Monday afternoon at White Clay Creek State Park.

The meet, which included nine men's teams and seven women's teams, was originally scheduled for Saturday morning but changed to Monday when the University cancelled all weekend event in response to the tragedies in New York and Washington on Tuesday.

Delaware won the men's Division I team title with 16 points followed by Towson (65), Howard (71), and Delaware State (95). Shippensburg captured the five-team Division II race with 15 points.

Delaware won the women's Division I team with 16 points followed by Towson (40), Delaware State (82) and Howard (114). Shippensburg captured the three-team Division II meet with 26 points.

The Blue Hens men placed four runners in the top 10 paced by Pat Riley who won the individual title with a time of 26:52 over the 8,000-meter course, a full 11 seconds faster than runner-up and teammate Mike Sadowsky.

Also placing in the top 10 for the Hens was Pat Boettcher in sixth with a time of 27:28. Carl Kinney placed 11th for the Hens (27:49) while Dave Finneran placed 13th.

On the women's side, Shippensburg's Kelly Stewart won the individual race with a time of 18:52 over the 5,000-meter course. Delaware's Aimee Alexander was one of six Blue Hen runners to place in the Top 20. Alexander led the Hens for the second straight meet with a time of 18:57 to place second overall, just five seconds off the winning time.

Also for Delaware, Monica Marchetta was fourth (19:25), Ashley Olsen was fifth (19:37), Karen Reber was sixth (19:51), and Kate Klim was ninth (20:18).

Both Delaware teams will next compete at the William & Mary Invitational Sept. 29.
