Marquez, Gomes Earn All-East Honors as Delaware Track Closes Out Season at ECAC Championships

BOSTON -- University of Delaware track and field standouts Cristine Marquez (at right) and Michelle Gomes both earned All-East honors and set school records in the process as the Blue Hen men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams closed out the season Sunday at the ECAC and IC4A regional championships.

The Blue Hen women posted four top 10 finishes and placed 47th in the team standings with two points at the ECAC Championships held Saturday and Sunday at The Reggie Lewis Center. The Delaware men had two top 20 finishes but did not earn points in the team standings and tied for 54th at the IC4A Championships at Boston University. Connecticut won the women’s title while Cornell won the men’s team crown.

Marquez placed eighth in the 400 meters, breaking her own school record with a time of 55.74 in the preliminaries and following with a time of 55.84 in the finals. She broke her own school record of 56.33. Maxcene Foster of St. John’s won the race with a time of 53.72.

Gomes competed in two events, placing eighth to earn All-East honors in the 60 meters and placing 11th in the 200 meters. She ran a time of 7.68 in the 60 meters in the preliminaries, finished with a time of 7.61 in the semifinals, and was clocked at 7.76 in the finals. She broke her own school record of 7.66 in the event. George Mason’s Murielle Ahoure won the race with a time of 7.33. In the 200 meters, Gomes ran to a time of 24.71 to place 11th overall. Ahoure also won that race with a time of 23.78.

Also for the Delaware women, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marquez, Daniella Price, Brittany Wright, and Asha Quant placed ninth with a time of 3:51.30 (3:50.37), Quant was ninth in the long jump with a leap; of 18-2 1/2), Kelli McDonald was 11th in the pole vault (11-7 3/4), and Rachel Young was 21st in the shot put (40-3 1/2). Connecticut won the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:41.72, Pitt’s Jane Murphy won the long jump (19-10 3/4), Lara Jones of Duke won the pole vault (12-7 1/2), and Buffalo’s Sarah Vance captured the shot put title (50-9 1/2).

On the men’s side, Delaware’s Jared Wasser finished 16th in the shot put with a toss of 52-1 3/4 while Gregg Cantwell placed 19th in the 3,000 meters with a career-best time of 8:28.08. Bucknell’s Matt Forys won the 3,000 meters in 8:05.64 and Manhattan’s Milan Jotanovic was the winner in the shot put with a toss of 62-6 3/4).
