BOSTON -- University of Delaware athletes posted five top 20 finishes, including an All-East performance by sophomore Cristine Marquez (at right) in the 400 meters, to highlight the final day of the IC4A and Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon.

The women’s ECAC Championship was held at the Reggie Lewis Center while the IC4A Championship was held at the Boston University Armory. Georgetown won the men’s team title while Connecticut captured the women’s team title. The Delaware women placed 36th in the team standings while the UD men finished 47th overall.

The Delaware women competed in four events Sunday led by Marquez, who earned All-East honors by placing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.54. She placed eighth in the event last season as a freshman and her finish Sunday was the best by a Blue Hen woman competitor this decade.

Marquez advanced to the finals after a sixth place finish in the preliminaries Saturday when she broke her own school record with a clocking of 55.45. She also placed 12th in the 200 meters Saturday with a career-best time of 24.72, the second best time in UD history, but did not advance to the finals.

Marquez later joined senior Asha Quant and freshmen Kristi Cox and Kayla Hennessy in the 4 x 400 meter relay finals but the Hens placed ninth after being disqualified for dropping the baton on the first leg of the race. The Hens had advanced to the finals after a third place finish in the preliminaries Saturday when they ran to a school record time of 3:45.44, shattering the mark of 3:50.27 by Brittany Wright, Kristen Frustillo, Tyechia Smith, and Mandy Stille in 2004.

Also for the UD women Sunday, junior Kelli McDonald was 11th in the pole vault with a height of 11-7 3/4, junior Amanda Marshall finished 13th in the weight throw with a toss of 51-3, and junior Laura Chirico placed 16th in the pole vault with a leap of 11-7 3/4.

The Delaware men had just one competitor Sunday with freshman John Viotto placing 21st in the shot put with toss of 48-4 3/4.

The meet concluded the 2008 indoor season for the Blue Hen track and field team. The outdoor season will get underway March 22 at the Towson Invitational.
