University of Delaware Competes in First Day of IC4A/ECAC Indoor Track Championships

BOSTON -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in five relay events and set two school records and Cristine Marquez qualified for the finals in the 200 and 400 meter races during the first day of the IC4A and ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon.

The ECAC meet was held at the Reggie Lewis Center while the men’s event took place at the Boston University Armory. The second and final day of action will begin Sunday morning.

On the women’s side, Delaware’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marquez, Asia Hollis, Alexi Capsouras, and Kristi Cox ran to a time of 3:50.91 while the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright (at right), and Karen Mandrachia raced to an 18th place finish with a clocking of 9:15.89, breaking its own school record of 9:16.78 earlier this season.

Marquez advanced to Sunday’s finals by placing sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 56.07 and finishing eighth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.85.

For the Delaware men, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Vinny Fronczkowski, Nick Morrisey, Justin Molligan, and Jeremy Simkins placed 14th in a time of 3:17.36 for the second best time in school history, the 4 x 800 meter relay group of James Townsend, Mike Tait, Nate Twer, and Corey Wall finished 15th in a time of 7:42.87, and the distance medley relay team of Kevin Sadeghipour, Kyle Chou, Tywan Brooks, and George Vernon was 29th in a time of 10:24.29, breaking the UD freshman record of 10:32.5 set in 1988.

The Delaware men will continue action Sunday with John Viotto competing in the shot put and Gregg Cantwell taking part in the 5,000 meters. Viotto placed 21st in the event a year ago.

For the Delaware women on Sunday, Amanda Marshall will compete in the weight throw, Kelli McDonald and Laura Chirico will take part in the pole vault, Cristine Marquez will compete in the 200 and 400 meter finals, and the distance medley relay team of Hollis, Christina Antonopoulos, Mandrachia, and Wright will also compete.
