HAVERFORD, PA -- The University of Delaware opened the 2008-09 indoor track and field season with several strong performances Friday night at the Villanova Jack Pyrah Invitational held at Haverford College’s Gary Lutnick Tennis and Track Center in Alumni Field House.
In addition to Delaware, also competing at the non-scoring meet were Haverford, Villanova, Temple, LaSalle, Widener, Swarthmore, and Ursinus. The Blue Hens will return to action in January.
Delaware athletes posted three first place finishes and 28 top five finishes during the meet highlighted by wins by freshman Jim Schwendtner in the men’s weight throw (53-11 1/4), sophomore John Viotto in the men’s shot put (52-0), and freshman Adelaide Freeman in the women’s 800 meters (2:38.05). Schwendtner had a strong debut as his toss was the fifth best in school history and the longest by a Blue Hen since the 2001 season.
Also for the Delaware men, Glenn Puzio was second in the mile (4:36.84), Chase Renoll was third in the shot put (48-2 1/2), Jamie Igo was third in the high jump (6-0 3/4) and fifth in the triple jump (39-10), Mike Ward was third in the 3,000 meters (8:55.18), James Townsend was third in the 800 meters (2:02.11), Jeremy Simkins was third in the 500 meters (1:06.82), and John Hally was third in the 55 meter hurdles (8.12).
Also for the Blue Hen women, Jennifer Holly was second in the pole vault (11-5 3/4) with the fourth highest leap in school history, Leah Putman (at right) was third in the triple jump (33-5 1/4), Annie Fulton was fourth in the triple jump (32-1), and Cristine Marquez was fourth in the 500 meters (1:17.35).
