BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team was a perfect five for five Saturday afternoon at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center as each Blue Hen competitor advanced to Sunday’s finals based on their preliminary finishes.
As has been the case all season, the duo of senior Cristine Marquez and freshman Vicky Caruso were at the center of the success as each advanced to the finals of the 200 and 400 meter competitions and teamed with Asia Hollis (at right) and Kristi Cox to advance in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
Marquez and Caruso advanced to Sunday’s 400 meter finals at 1:55 p.m. as Marquez finished third in the preliminaries with a time of 54.91 while Caruso was fourth with a clocking of 55.42. Caruso’s time was just .09 shy of her career best.
The two also advanced to Sunday’s 200 meter finals at 2:35 p.m. with Caruso finishing sixth overall with a mark of 24.42 and Marquez placing eighth with a 24.58 showing. Caruso was just .06 off her school record time while Marquez was only .19 off her career best.
The two then combined with Hollis and Cox to post a third place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:46.47, less than a second off the foursome’s all-time best. George Mason had the top time in the event with a clocking of 3:44.02 while Seton Hall was second with a showing of 3:46.31. Sunday’s final race will be held at 3:10 p.m.
Delaware will also have one other competitor on Sunday when senior Laura Chirico takes part in the pole vault beginning at 11 a.m. Chirico has captured 10 meet titles during her career, including five indoors and four this winter.
