University of Delaware Posts Five Top 10 Finishes, Places 22nd in Team Standings at ECAC Indoor Track Championship

BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field squad closed out its 2009-2010 season Sunday with a strong showing at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center as the Hens posted five top 10 finishes.

Senior Cristine Marquez (at right) led the Blue Hens once again as she earned All-East honors in three different events as she placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 54.33, sixth in the 200 meters with a clocking of 24.48, and teamed with freshman Vicky Caruso, junior Asia Hollis, and junior Kristi Cox to place sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:45.83, just .09 off the team’s career best time.

Marquez has now won All-East indoor honors seven times in her career, including placing sixth in the 200 meters and seventh in the 400 meters a year ago, fourth in the 400 meters during the 2008 season, and eighth in the 400 meters in 2007 as a freshman.

Seton Hall’s Jernail Hayes won the 400 meter event with a time of 53.08, Connecticut’s Tricia-Ann Hawthorne captured the 200 meters with a time of 23.86, and Seton Hall was the winner in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a 3:40.33 showing.

Delaware finished in 22nd place in the team standings with 14 points, tied with St. John’s. Conneticut captured the ECAC team title with 84.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Seton Hall and third place finisher George Mason.

Also for the Hens, Caruso earned All-East honors in three events as she was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 55.40 and ninth in the 200 meters with a clocking of 25.19 in addition to her finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Delaware senior Laura Chirico also finished 12th in the pole vault with a leap of 11-feet, 7 3/4-inches.
