BOSTON -- University of Delaware athletes will be competing in four events this weekend at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center.
The event will conclude the season for the Blue Hens, who competed in 12 meets this season. The meet will include the top athletes from NCAA Division I schools from Maine to North Carolina.
Competing for the Blue Hens will be senior Cristine Marquez in the 200 meter and 400 meters events, freshman Vicky Caruso in the 200 meters and 400 meters, senior Laura Chirico (above) in the pole vault, and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marquez, Caruso, juniors Asia Hollis and Kristi Cox, and freshman Nijah Dupiche. Caruso also qualified in the 55 meters and senior Amanda Marshall qualified in the weight throw but will not compete.
Marquez and Caruso will compete in the 400 meter trials at 2:20 p.m. Saturday and in the 200 meter trials the same day at 3:30 p.m. The 4 x 400 meter relay trials will begin at 4:25 p.m. Saturday. The finals in each event will be held on Sunday, the same day that Chirico will take part in the pole vault at 11 a.m.
Marquez, who earned All-East honors at the ECAC meet last year by placing sixth in the 200 meters and seventh in the 400 meters and by placing fourth in the 400 meters in 2008, is the top seed in the 400 meters with a time of 54.26, a time that met the NCAA Division I provisional qualifying standard. She will attempt to capture the ECAC title and reach the NCAA qualifying time of 52.40.
