NEW YORK -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team continued to dominate in the sprint events Friday as the Blue Hens captured four first place finishes and set three school records at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational at the New York City Armory.

Once again it was freshman Vicky Caruso (at left in photo) and senior Cristine Marquez (at right) who led the way for the Hens as they combined with Asia Hollis and Kristi Cox to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay and each won a sprint event and the two combined for three other second place finishes. Each also set a school record.

Caruso won the 200 meter dash with a school record time of 24.36, breaking the school record o 24.62 set by Michelle Gomes in 2007, and then placed second in both the 60 meter dash and 400 meters. She ran to a time of 7.81 in the 60 meters to break the school freshman record of 7.88 set by Brittany Wright in 2004 and by Daniella Price in 2003 and ran to a time of 55.33 in the 400 meters.

Marquez captured the 400 meters as she broke her own school record with a time of 54.51, besting her mark of 55.45 set in 2008 when she was a sophomore. Her time just missed being an NCAA Provisional qualifying time. She later finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.42.

The Blue Hens also got a big effort from Karen Mandrachia, who won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:59.93 and also placed fourth in the mile with a clacking of 5:05.59.

The Hens posted 21 top 10 finishes on the day led by Hollis, who also was third in the 60 meters (7.92), fifth in the 200 meters (25.85), and eighth in the 800 meters (58.91).

Also for the Hens, Leeann Seiwell was second in the 5,000 meters (18:09.45), Christine Sloat was third in the 5,000 meters (18:12.44), the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Kellyn Wright, Samantha Jones, Kathryn Jenkins, and Marla Woodarek placed fourth with a season best time of 10:06.77, Cox was fourth in the 400 meters (58.06) and ninth in the 200 meters (26.16), Wright was fifth in the 800 meters (2:18.61), and Laura Chirico was the Hens’ top field finisher with a fifth place showing in the pole vault (11-3 3/4).

The Blue Hens will continue action next Friday, Feb. 13 when they travel to the Keogh Invitational at Haverford (Pa.) College.
