HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Briana Gray (at right) captured the high jump competition, Victoria Caruso set three school records, and the University of Delaware women’s indoor track & field team posted 12 other top 10 finishes as the Blue Hens opened the 2009-10 season with a solid performance at the Jack Pyrah Invitational at Haverford College’s Alumni Field House.

Gray, a junior from Haddon Heights, N.J. (Haddon Heights High School), was the Blue Hens’ lone individual champion on the day as she cleared the high jump bar with a leap of 5-feet, 1-inch, to win the event. She won the event at the meet for the second time in three years after also capturing the Pyrah high jump title in 2007.

Caruso, a freshman Stockholm, N.J. (Walkill Valley HS) from making her collegiate debut enjoyed an outstanding first competition as she placed third in both the 55 meters and 300 meters. She ran the 55 meters in 7.26 to break the UD freshman record of 7.37 by Brittany Wright in 2004, and posted a time of 39.81 in the 300 meters to break the UD school record of 40.74 by Michelle Gomes in 2007 and the UD freshman record of 42.71 by Alex Francis in 2008.

Also for the Blue Hens, Laura Chirico was runner-up in the pole vault (11-5 3/4), Alexa Windsor was third in the high hump (4-11), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Caruso, Nijah Dupiche, Yessina Boynton, Kristi Cox was fourth (3:55.43), Jillian Seamon was fifth in the shot put (34-4), and Cox was fifth n the 500 meters (1:17.33).

Delaware also had four seventh place finishes led by Cassandra Wallen in the pole vault (8-11 3/4), Nijah Dupiche in the 300 meters (41.65), Cristine Marquez in the 500 meters (1:18.65), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kathryn Jenkins, Erica Sickler, Marla Woodarek, and Lauren Booking (4:13.38).

The Blue Hens will return to action Jan. 8 when they host the annual Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Field House.
