NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field athletes captured six first place finishes, including three by freshman Vicky Caruso, and the Blue Hens placed second overall in the team standings at the annual Thomson Invitational hosted by UD Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House.

Towson won the women’s Division I team title, East Stroudsburg won the women’s Division II/III team title, Saint Joseph’s won the men’s Division I team title, and East Stroudsburg was the winner in the men’s Division II/III competition.

The Towson women posted 217 points to outdistance the Blue Hens for the team title. Delaware earned 182 points followed by Delaware State (120), Coppin State (71.67), Loyola (46.33), Saint Joseph’s (18), New Jersey Institute of Technology (12), and Villanova. Overall, 42 men’s and women’s teams competed at the all-day event.

Caruso won the 60 meters with a time of 7.95 seconds, captured the 200 meters with a clocking of 25.25, and then teamed with Asia Hollis, Kristy Cox, and Cristine Marquez to win with a time of 3:54.09.

Also captured first place finishes were Karen Mandrachia in the 1,000 meters (3:02.20), Marquez in the 400 meters (58.02), and Laura Chirico in the pole vault (11-9 3/4). Chirico won her 10th career meet title, including her fifth indoors and fourth this season.

Marquez also placed second in the 200 meters (25.57) and was joined by five other Blue Hens as runners-up led by Sophie Kauffman in the 5,000 meters (18:41.94), Alison Zukowski in the 3,000 meters (10:42.05), Kellyn Wright in the 800 meters (2:22.21), Jaclyn Marangella in the pole vault (9-4 1/4), Amanda Marshall in the shot put (39-11 1/2) and weight throw (48-1 1/4).

Delaware will return to action Feb. 5-6 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory and Feb. 6 at the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus.
