NEWARK, Del. -- Freshman Vicky Caruso (at right) won three sprint events and senior Amanda Marshall won both throwing events to lead the University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team to a second place team finish at the Delaware Invitational Friday night at the Delaware Field House.
The meet marked the home opener for the Blue Hens and was the team’s first competition since early December.
Delaware posted seven first place finishes and 21 top five finishes to 185 points and place second in the Division I team standings. Navy won the team title with 272.5 points followed by Delaware, Coppin State (69.5), La Salle (47), Saint Joseph’s (20), and Delaware State (6). Ursinus won the women’s Division II/III team title while LaSalle won the men’s Division I title and Ursinus captured the men’s Division II/III championship.
Caruso won the 60 meters in 7.94 seconds and the 200 meters in 25.64 and also teamed with Asia Hollis, Nijah Dupiche, and Kristi Cox to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:59.94. She also placed second in the 500 meters with a time of 1:19.15. Marshall was a winner in both the shot put (41-5 3/4) and the weight throw (52-11).
Also for the Blue Hens, Dupiche captured the 400 meters (1:00.07) and was third in the 200 meters (26.73), Laura Chirico won the pole vault (11-1 3/4), Karen Mandrachia was second in the 3,000 meters (10:44.49), Christine Sloat was third in the 3,000 meters (10:34.00), Marla Woodarek was third in the 800 meters (2:34.89), and Hollis was third in the 60 meters (8.12).
Kellyn Wright was fourth in the mile (5:21.34), Samantha Jones was fourth in the 800 meters (2:34.90), Yesenia Boynton was fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.82), Briana Gray was fourth in the high jump (5-1), Cassandra Wallen was fourth in the pole vault (9-2 1/4), Jaclyn Marangella was fifth in the pole vault (8-8 1/4), Alexa Windsor was fifth in the high jump (4-11), and Samantha Hunger was seventh in the triple jump (32-3).
