Blue Hens Rally To Down Hofstra; Wescott Wins 100th Career Game


NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware rallied from a two-goal deficit and took control by scoring five straight goals in a span of 5:40 to post a 14-11 America East women's lacrosse victory over Hofstra Thursday afternoon at Rullo Stadium, giving UD head coach Denise Wescott her 100th career victory.

Ashley Moderacki Scored a Season-High Three Goals
The 11th ranked Blue Hens (11-2, 4-1 America East) moved into sole possession of second place with their 14th straight league home victory. Hofstra (8-4, 2-1) had a five-game winning streak snapped and suffered its first league loss of the season. Delaware has now defeated the Dutchwomen 11 times in 12 meetings.Wescott improved to 100-73 in her 11th season of college coaching, including a 78-42 mark in seven seasons at Delaware. She becomes just the seventh active NCAA Division I head coach to reach the mark.

Brooke Mulligan Scored a Career-High Three Goals
Sophomore Brooke Mulligan (Mt. de Sales/Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA), who had scored just nine goals combined all season entering the game, each scored three goals to lead the balanced Blue Hen attack. Leading scorer, senior Sarah Edwards (Friends/Moorestown, NJ), added two goals and two assists while junior Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) had one goal and one assist and junior Kate O'Connell (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) scored two goals and had an assist.

Janet Walsh led Hofstra with four goals while Jessica Gaither scored three times, Kathleen McPike had a goal and five assists, and Kristin Marshall had a goal and three assists.

The game featured seven ties, including five in the first half. Moderacki scored the last two goals of the first half to give the Hens a 7-6 lead into intermission.

The Dutchwomen took control in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the stanza to take a 9-7 lead with 17:19 left to play. But that's when the Blue Hens got hot.

Mulligan, who entered the game with just five career goals, and O'Connell each scored open net goals to tie the game at 9-9 with 7:26 left to play and Katrina Metz, Moderacki, and Christy Buck each added tallies in a 100-second span to up the lead to 12-9 with 3:40 remaining.

Hofstra cut the lead to 12-10 on a goal by Walsh with 2:24 left, but Delaware defender Claire Marrazzo added some insurance with an unassisted score with 59 seconds left to put the game away.

Senior Kelly Kenney (Pennwood/East Lansdowne, PA), making her final regular season home appearance, picked up the win in goal after taking over for starter Laurie Tortorelli with 9:13 left in the first half with the Blue Hens down 6-4. Kenney posted four saves to spark Delaware to the win.
