Edwards Scores
Five, Hits 100 Career Points in
Victory
NORFOLK, VA --
Senior Sarah Edwards (Moorestown, NJ Friends) scored
five goals and dished out an assist to reach the 100 career
point mark as the No. 14 ranked University of Delaware
women's lacrosse squad opened its season with a 14-9 win
over No. 19 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon.
The Hens (1-0), who won
their fourth straight game since last season, snapped a
streak of seven straight season-opening losses, winning for
the first time since a win over Richmond in their 1992
season debut. Old Dominion (0-1) was also making its 2000
season debut.
The Hens, the three-time
defending America East champions, led just 5-4 at halftime
but took over the game in the second half to down the
Monarchs for the second straight year.
Edwards, a CoSIDA
Academic All-American candidate and a 1999 All-Region
all-star, scored her five goals on just six shots to up her
career total to 101 points on 75 goals and 26 assists. She
is just the 19th player in Delaware history to reach the
100-point plateau.
Junior Megan Fortunato
(Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA), last year's team leader in
scoring, added three goals and two assists while co-captain
Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) added two
goals. Sophomore Laurie Tortorelli
(Haverford/Havertown, PA), the 1999 America East Rookie of
the Year, recorded 10 saves in goal to earn the
win.
Jenna Bajus led Old
Dominion with four goals while Jennifer Heister scored three
times.
