Buck's Second Half
Heroics Helps Hens Hold Off
Richmond
NEWARK, DE -- Senior co-captain
Christy Buck (Mt. de Sales/Catonsville, MD) scored
all four of her goals in the second half as No. 14 ranked
University of Delaware held off Richmond for an 11-8
non-league women's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at
Rullo Stadium.
Buck, a two-time all-region midfielder,
was held quiet in the first half but sparked the Hens in the
second half against the upset-minded Spiders.
The win was Delaware's sixth straight
since last season and upped the Hens' record to 3-0, the
best start for a Delaware team since the 1989 squad opened
up 4-0. Richmond got two second half goals from Carrie
Aitken, but dropped its third straight game to fall to 2-4.
It was Delaware's fourth straight win over the Spiders and
13th in the teams' last 14 meetings.
Junior Kate O'Connell (Mt. de
Sales/Columbia, MD) added three goals for the Blue Hens and
Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) chipped
in with two to lead the Delaware effort. Richmond got
scoring from seven different players with Katie Dolan
scoring a goal and adding one assist.
The game looked like a runaway early as
the Hens scored the game's first four goals, including two
by O'Connell, before Richmond got on the board with a goal
by Amy Stringer with 17:31 left in the opening half. The
Hens took a 5-2 lead into intermission.
Buck scored three goals in the first 20
minutes of the second half to stake the Hens to a 9-5 lead
with 10:17 left to play. But Richmond rallied behind two
goals by Aitken and cut the lead to 9-7 with 5:02 left. But
Buck responded once again for the Hens, scoring just 1:03
later to put the Hens up 10-7 with 3:59 left.
Richmond cut the lead to two goals once
again on a goal by Jessica Popham with 2:57 left, but the
Hens added an insurance goal when Corinne Shuck
(Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) scored off a feed from Brooke
Mulligan (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, MD) with 25 seconds
left to play.
The three-time defending America East
champion Blue Hens will put their 23-game conference win
streak on the line today (Sunday) when they open conference
play at home vs. Vermont at 1 p.m.
