Delaware 10, Vanderbilt 8

NEWARK, DE - Behind three goals each from Kate O' Connell and Megan Fortunato and a 13-save game from goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli, the No. 7 ranked University of Delaware women's lacrosse team downed 12th-ranked Vanderbilt University, 10-8 Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware (9-1) never trailed in the game as Sarah Edwards (Moorestown, NJ/Friends) scored an unassisted goal at 7:22 to put Delaware up, 1-0. Fortunato (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) added the next two goals of the game, at 10:30 and 22:51, to give Delaware a 3-0 lead.

Vanderbilt (6-5) struck right before the half as Becky Kehl scored off a Tara Schmucker assist to make the halftime score 3-1.

The Hens came out of the gate in the second half scoring three in a row. O' Connell (Columbia, MD/Mt. De Sales) scored the first two goals of the half, both off of Fortunato assists. Ashley Moderacki (Havertown, PA/Haverford) added an unnassisted goal at 36:25.

Vanderbilt's Amanda Rice scored two quick goals in the next two minutes to cut the Delaware lead to 6-3.

Vanderbilt cut the Delaware lead to 7-6 at 51:39 and 8-7 at 56:22, but the Hens iced the game at 57:40 when O'Connell scored her third goal off a Christy Buck (Catonsville, MD/Mt. De Sales) assist.

The Hens had an outstanding day from goalkeeper Tortorelli (Havertown, PA/Haverford) who saved 13 of Vanderbilt's 21 shots.

The Hens saw Liz Walton (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) and Lindsay Parsons (Chalfont, PA/Mt. St. Joseph's) add one goal each.

Vanderbilt had a three-goal game from Amanda Rice while Sue Napolitano and Kehl added two. Carol Mans scored as well.

Delaware will travel to New Hampshire on Friday to take on the Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. The Hens will return home on April 20 and battle America East foe Hofstra.
