Edwards Leads Romp
Over Vermont in America East
Opener
NEWARK, DE -- A total of 11 different
Blue Hen players scored at least one goal led by senior
Sarah Edwards' team-high four as No. 14 ranked
University of Delaware overwhelmed Vermont 21-2 in an
America East conference women's lacrosse game Sunday
afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
The three-time defending America East
champion Blue Hens (4-0, 1-0), off to their best start since
the 1989 season, extended their winning streak to seven
games since last season and upped their America East
conference victory streak to 24 straight games since 1996.
Vermont (0-1, 0-1), which managed just
two first half goals from Alex Cardasis and Liz Lundgren,
lost its season opener and extended its own America East
losing streak to 20 games since 1996.
It was a group effort for the Blue Hens
as all 22 team members saw extensive action and 12 had at
least one point, including 11 who scored goals.
Academic All-American candidate Edwards
(Moorestown, NJ Friends) led the way for the Hens with four
goals, extending her career total to 82 in four seasons.
Delaware, which outshot the Catamounts
40-11, also got three goals and one assist from freshman
Lindsay Parsons (Mt. St. Joseph's/Chalfont, PA) and
two goals each from junior Megan Fortunato (Upper
Moreland/Hatboro, PA), junior Kate O'Connell (Mt. de
Sales/Columbia, MD), senior Kelly Swift
(Mercy/Sparks, MD), freshman Nikki Kucharski (Cherry
Creek/Englewood, CO), and freshman Libby Pforr (Cold
Spring Harbor/Lloyd Harbor, NY). Fortunato also dished out
three assists on the day.
Delaware goalkeepers Laurie Tortorelli
(Haverford/Havertown, PA) and Kelly Kenney
(Pennwood/East Lansdowne, PA) each played a half and
combined for nine saves with Tortorelli posting six in the
opening stanza. Vermont goalkeeper Rachael Kaplan posted 15
saves.
Delaware's Ashley Moderacki
(Haverford/Havertown, PA) scored the game's first goal
3:36 into the game and the Hens built a 7-0 lead before
Vermont got on the board with a goal by Cardasis with 10:20
left in the first half. The Hens moved on to an 11-2
halftime lead and outscored the Catamounts 11-0 in the
second half to win going away.
