Blue Hen Coaching Staff and Players to Watch

HEAD COACH DENISE WESCOTT

Denise Wescott, who begins her sixth season as head coach of the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team this spring, has quickly rebuilt the Blue Hens into a conference power and a contender on the national collegiate scene.

Wescott, who owns a five-year record of 53-35 at Delaware, including an impressive 22-9 record in conference play, has led the Blue Hens to back-to-back America East championships and just barely missed leading her team to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

The Blue Hens posted a 12-6 record and won their first ever America East title in 1997 under Wescott, finishing No. 15 in the final national rankings.

The Hens improved upon that in 1998, going 14-4, the most wins by a University of Delaware women's lacrosse team in over a decade, posted a perfect 6-0 record in league play, and finished No. 12 in the final national poll.

For her efforts, Wescott was named America East Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in her career last spring. She also won the award in 1996, then the North Atlantic Conference, when she led the Blue Hens to an 8-8 record, including a 4-1 league mark that placed Delaware second in the regular season.

A native of Moorestown, NJ, Wescott began her collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant field hockey coach at Michigan State in 1980. She served as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at

Maryland and Penn State, playing a key part in winning two lacrosse NCAA championships; in 1986 at Maryland and in 1987 at Penn State.

She also served as head field hockey and head lacrosse coach at Drew (NJ) University for one season in 1989-90 before moving on to Rutgers, where she served as head lacrosse coach for three seasons from 1991-93. Her overall career head coaching record in lacrosse stands at 75-66 in nine seasons.

Wescott was a two-sport standout as a goalkeeper in both field hockey and lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

She captained the field hockey team in 1979 and lacrosse team in 1980 and was a U.S. Women Lacrosse Association (USWLA) All-American in 1980.

Wescott serves at the United States level as a clinician for the USWLA and Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and is a three-year chair of the U.S. National Team Selection Committee.

An outstanding coach with international experience, Wescott has been instrumental in teaching the game throughout the world.

She has served as coach of the German National Team, travelling with the team the last three summers to the European Cup in Bonn, Germany in 1996, Stockholm, Sweden in 1997, and Prague, Czech Republic in 1998.

In the summer of 1993 she directed lacrosse camps in Japan.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Sarah Witkowski and Amy McCleary both return to the Blue Hen women's lacrosse coaching staff in 1999.

Witkowski, aa 1995 graduate of William & Mary, is in her third season with the Blue Hens. Before coming to Delaware, she served as graduate assistant at her alma mater, working on a master's degree in exercise physiology.

At Delaware, she is in charge of coordinating and running goalkeeper practices. Witkowski starred as a goalkeeper for the Tribe's field hockey and lacrosse teams and was a South Region All-American in both sports during the 1994-95 season.

She was named the 1995 Colonial Athletic Association Lacrosse Player of the Year in 1995. She was also a member of the Athletic Advisory Council in 1993-1994 at William & Mary. As an assistant with the Delaware women's lacrosse team, Witkowski has been instrumental in leading the Blue Hens to two straight America East tournament titles.

McCleary is beginning her third season with the UD staff. McCleary, a 1993 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, MD, enjoyed a standout career at NCAA Division III Washington (Md.) College where she was a four-year starter on attack.

She earned first team All-American honors in 1993 and third team All-American honors in 1992. Her career totals of 113 goals, 28 assists, and 141 points all ranks among the top 10 all-time at Washington College.
