MVP Fortunato
Leads Delaware Women Laxers to Third Straight America East
Title
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Tournament Most
Valuable Player Megan Fortunato recorded her second
straight five-goal game and also dished out three assists as
the University of Delaware women's lacrosse squad cruised to
its third straight America East title with a 15-8 win over
Boston University Sunday at Hofstra Stadium.
The No. 13 ranked Blue Hens (13-5) jumped
out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back in posting the easy
win over the No. 17 ranked and No. 2 seed Terriers (14-4).
Delaware, which captured its seventh league title in school
history, including its third under head coach Denise
Wescott, has now won 23 straight league games since
1997.
Fortunato, a sophomore from Hatboro, PA
(Upper Moreland HS) who scored five goals in Delaware's 9-4
semifinal win over Towson Saturday, scored two of her goals
in the pivotal 6-0 run to lead the Blue Hens.
Senior co-captain Amy Sullivan
(Abington/Meadowbrook, PA) added three goals and two assists
and senior Robyn Hill (Washington Twp./Sewell, NJ)
added two goals and two assists to lead the Blue Hens.
America East Rookie of the Year Laurie Tortorelli
(Haverford/Havertown, PA) posted 15 saves in goal to
lead the Blue Hen defensive effort. Sullivan, Tortorelli,
and senior defender Kelly Griffith (Shawnee/Medford,
NJ) joined Fortunato on the All-Tournament team.
Boston University got four goals from
Kyle Rutkowski and two from Jean Cooney but America East
Player of the Year Chrissy Lombard was held to just one
goals and two assists.
Delaware's Christy Buck scored
just 29 seconds into the game to lead the Blue Hens, who
jumped out to a 6-0 cushion before the Terriers scored with
15:09 left in the first half. Delaware moved on to a 9-3
halftime lead and Boston University never got closer than
five goals the rest of the way.
