Delaware Women Laxers Edge Old Dominion 10-7

 

SALISBURY, MD -- Robyn Hill scored three goals and Megan Fortunato added two as No. 13 ranked University of Delaware kept its post-season chances alive with a 10-7 womens' lacrosse win over No. 16 Old Dominion Tuesday at Salisbury State University.

The Blue Hens (9-4) scored five unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie early in the game and stayed in front the rest of the way for their third straight victory. Old Dominion (6-8), which was playing its sixth straight Top 20 opponent, got three goals from Pam Seebald. Kailynne Ross, the team's leading goal scorer with 38, was held to just one score.

The game, which was originally scheduled for March 14 in Newark, DE but snowed out midway through the first half, was moved to Salisbury State as a midway point between the two schools.

Old Dominion tied the game at 1-1 early on but the Hens rallied for five straight goals on the way to a 6-3 halftime lead. The Monarchs cut the lead to 6-4 early in the second half but could never get closer the rest of the way.

Delaware goalkeepers Laurie Tortorelli and Kelly Kenney each played a half and combined to stop 18 Old Dominion shots, including 11 by Kenney in the second stanza. Old Dominion's Laura Koller posted 11 saves.

Seven different Delaware players scored goals as Toni Leidy, Denise Guerra, Amy Sullivan, Sarah Edwards, and Kelly Swift each added one and Christy Buck dished out two assists. Katie Haney, Jenna Bajus, and Dana Wisniewski also scored for ODU.

Delaware will travel to America East foe Hofstra Thursday and return home to take on No. 8 Loyola on Saturday at Rullo Stadium.
