Delaware Women's Lacrosse Downs Towson 11-9 in AE Play

TOWSON, MD -- Senior Amy Sullivan (Meadowbrook, PA/Abington) scored four goals and sophomore Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) scored three times, including an insurance goal with 2:09 left to play, as the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team defeated Towson 11-9 in its America East opener Wednesday afternoon.

The 16th ranked Blue Hens (2-1), the two-time defending America East champions, extended their win streak to 16 straight games over conference opponents since 1997. Towson, the last conference team to defeat the Hens, had a three-game win streak snapped to fall to 3-3, 2-1.

Sullivan, the team's leading scorer each of the past two seasons, scored two goals in each half to lead the way. Junior Sarah Edwards added two goals and an assist while junior Christy Buck had a goal and an assist, freshman Corinne Schuck scored a goal, and senior Robyn Hill had two assists. Nicki Popolano led the Tigers with three goals while Amie Rose had two goals and two assists and Jessica Weissman netted two goals.

Delaware jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind two Sullivan goals and took a 6-5 lead into halftime. The Hens led 10-7 with 14:09 left to play before Towson rallied behind goals from Rose and Courtney Benner to cut the lead to 10-9 with 4:01 left to play. But the Hens added some insurance as Fortunato scored off a free position with 2:09 left to play to clinch the win.

The Hens will travel to No. 7 ranked James Madison Saturday.
