HEMPSTEAD, NY -- No. 3 seed and
17th ranked Boston University broke a 3-3 tie by scoring the
final three goals of the first half and moved on to post an
11-6 victory over No. 2 seed University of Delaware in the
America East Women's Lacrosse semifinals Friday night at
Hofstra University Stadium.
In the other semifinal game, top seed and
16th ranked Hofstra advanced to the championship game for
the second straight year with a 13-5 win over No. 4 seed New
Hampshire. Kathleen McPike led the Pride (15-2) with three
goals and three assists. Hofstra and Boston University will
square off at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winner earning an
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware, which got two goals each from
junior Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) and
Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA), ended its
season with a record of 7-10. Junior goalkeeper Laurie
Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) posted 14 saves in
goal. The Blue Hens had won three of the last four America
East titles but were eliminated in the semifinals for the
second straight year.
Boston University, whom the Hens beat 9-7
back on April 14 in Newark, improved to 11-7 as Kyle
Rutkowski scored three goals and dished out an assist and
Chrissy Lombard, Polly Purcell, and Rachel Leiber each
tallied twice.
The Blue Hens scored the first goal of
the game and later tied the contest at 3-3 on a goal by
Megan Fortunato (Upper Moreland/Hatboro, PA) with
10:27 left before intermission.
The Terriers responded with three
straight goals with Purcell scoring one and assisting on
another. The third goal with 3:32 left in the first half
gave BU a 6-3 halftime lead. Delaware cut the lead to 8-6 on
a goal by Shuck with 15:18 left to play, but the Hens could
not score again. Lombard tallied with 11:09 left for a 9-6
lead and Rutkowski scored five minutes later for some
insurance.
Fortunato, who led the team in scoring
with 35 goals and 50 points, closed her outstanding career
at Delaware with 119 goals and 69 assists for 191 points to
rank eighth all-time.
