Delaware Rally Falls Short; Hofstra Takes Over First Place in America East

Academic All-American candidate Katy Hahn had a goal and two assists

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The battle for sole possession of first place in the America East women's lacrosse standings came down to overtime Thursday night and host Hofstra prevailed with a 10-9 victory over the University of Delaware.

Senior Kathleen McPike, the leading scorer in the America East, scored with 17 seconds left in the first overtime to lead the 16th ranked Pride to the thrilling victory. Delaware, which had a two-game win streak snapped, fell to 6-8 (4-1 America East) to drop back into a tie for second place. The Hens rallied from a 6-1 halftime deficit to send the game in overtime, but came up short in the extra session.

Hofstra (11-2, 3-0 America East) moved into sole possession of first place with a 3-0 mark while Delaware dropped into a second place tie with Boston University and New Hampshire, who each lost their first conference game of the season last week vs. Delaware. Hofstra still must face Boston University, New Hampshire, and fifth place Vermont while Delaware will close out its conference regular season in its next game, April 28 at Vermont. The regular season champion will host the four-team America East Tournament May 4-5 with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Hofstra, which won for the 10th time in the last 11 games, was led by sophomore Kathleen Mikowski who scored a game-high four goals. McPike, who entered the game leading the league with 50 points on 25 goals and 25 assists, scored twice. Jessica Gaither had a goal and two assists.

Junior Ashley Moderacki led the Blue Hens with three goals while seniors Kate O'Connell and Megan Fortunato each added two goals and one assist. Moderacki upped her team-leading goal total to 30 while O'Connell upped her career point total to 102, becoming just the 22nd player in UD history to surpass the 100-point mark.

Delaware, which lost to Hofstra in the 2000 America East semifinals, lost for just the sixth time in 41 America East games since joining the league in 1991-92. The overtime setback was the first ever for the Hens in league play.

Hofstra built a 6-1 lead at the half, scoring four times in the final eight minutes for the lead. Moderacki scored the Hens' lone first half goal with 6:30 left and Hofstra already up 3-0.

But Delaware countered in the second half, outscoring Hofstra 8-3 to send the game into the extra session. Hofstra scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 8-1 lead, but Delaware charged back, scoring eight unanswered goals to go up 9-8 with 9:25 left to play. The Pride finally broke a 21 minute scoring drought when Mikowski scored with 47 seconds left in regulation to send the contest to overtime.

McPike scored what proved to be the game-winner when she converted with 17 seconds left in the first three-minute overtime. Neither team could score in the second overtime, sending the Pride to the win.
