HARRISONBURG, VA -- Lisa Staedt
scored both her goals in overtime as No. 7 ranked James
Madison knocked off No. 18 University of Delaware in a key
women's lacrosse Top 20 matchup Saturday
afternoon.
James Madison, which avenged a 14-13
upset loss to Delaware last season in Newark, improved to
5-1 on the season while the Blue Hens dropped their second
straight game, both to Top 20 opponents, to fall to
3-3.
Staedt scored 98 seconds into overtime to
give the Dukes the lead for good and added another score
with 55 seconds left in the second overtime to lead James
Madison.
Kristen Dinisio and Mindy Leher each
scored three goals to lead James Madison to the victory.
Megan Fortunato and Ashley Moderacki each scored two goals
to lead the Blue Hens with Moderacki also adding two
assists. Delaware goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli posted 18
saves.
After a 3-3 deadlock at halftime, the
game went back and forth several times in the second half
before Delaware took a 7-5 lead with 6:45 left in regulation
on back-to-back goals by Kate O'Connell and
Fortunato.
But James Madison rallied as Leher scored
with 3:25 left to cut the lead to 7-6 and then sent the game
into the extra session on a goal with 2:23 left.
Delaware, which lost to No. 13 ranked
Penn State 6-5 on Wednesday, was playing its first overtime
game since a 10-8 loss to Princeton in 1999. The Hens also
lost to James Madison 11-10 in overtime in 1998.
Delaware continues its six-game road
swing March 30 at Vanderbilt.
