Reynolds Scores Four First Half Goals to Lift Big Red

Freshman Kelly O'Connor Scored a Goal for the Blue Hens

ITHACA, NY-- Jaimee Reynolds scored four of her game-high five goals in the opening half and assisted on another first half score as No. 6 ranked Cornell University defeated the University of Delaware 14-6 in a non-league women's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Schoelkopf Stadium.

Cornell, the Ivy League runner-up to No. 1 ranked Princeton, won its seventh straight game to improve to 13-1 overall. The Blue Hens, who got two goals and an assist from senior Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD), dropped their second straight to fall to 4-11 overall, tying a school record for losses in a season set in 1991 and 1993. Cornell was the 10th top 20 opponent this season for the Blue Hens, who have lost seven games by four or less goals this season.

Also for the Blue Hens, sophomore Becky Zane (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, PA) and freshman Erin Edell (Glenelg/Glenelg, MD) each contributed a goal and an assist while senior goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) posted 14 saves in goal. Shuck scored multiple goals for the fourth straight game and for the 12th time this season to up her team-leading total to 33 on the year.

Delaware will close out the 2002 season this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium as the Hens take on yet another ranked among opponent in No. 17 Penn State. The game will feature sisters Laurie (Delaware) and Elizabeth Tortorelli (Penn State) squaring off against each other as their team's starting goalkeeper.

After Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Shuck scored just 1:49 into the contest, Reynolds took the game over. The Cornell team leader with 43 goals this spring, Reynolds scored the Big Red's first three goals of the game, assisted on the fourth, and scored on the fifth to give Cornell a 5-2 lead with 2:41 left in the first half. Cornell built the lead to 6-2 at intermission.

The Blue Hens scored the first goal of the second half on a tally by Michelle Campolettano to cut the lead to 6-3, but Cornell answered by scoring five of the next six goals of the game, including one by Reynolds, for an insurmountable 11-4 margin.

Lindsay Steinberg and Sarah Averson each added two goals apiece for Cornell.
