April 14, 2002 Kucharski Scores Four Goals to Pace Hens to Second Straight Win
NEWARK, DE -- Junior Nikki Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) scored a career-high four goals and senior Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD), sophomore Becky Zane (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, PA), and junior Shannon Kron (Maryvale Prep/Baltimore, MD) each chipped in with two goals each as the University of Delaware posted an 11-8 Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse victory over Hofstra University Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens (4-9, 3-5 CAA), who snapped an eight-game losing streak with an 8-7 win over 19th ranked George Mason Thursday, made it two straight wins with the victory over the Pride. Delaware avenged a 10-9 overtime loss to Hofstra last season in Hempstead, NY and an America East tournament semifinal loss to the Pride in 2000 in the previous two meetings. Hofstra, which entered the game having won six of its previous eight games, lost its second straight following a five-game win streak. The Pride fell to 7-6, 3-5 CAA but still stayed alive in the hunt for one of six spots in next weekend's CAA Tournament in Richmond. Megan Zimmer led Hofstra with four goals while Kristin Marshall added three goals and one assist and Melissa Hedrick contributed one goal and two assists. Delaware held leading scorer Kathleen Mikowski (33 goals, 11 assists) to just one assist. Delaware senior Laurie Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) was outstanding in goal, stopping 12 Hofstra shots. Shuck also dished out two assists for Delaware. Hofstra's Megan Greene posted seven saves. Both teams came out strong, combining to score six goals in the first nine minutes of action as Hofstra took a 4-2 lead. But Delaware came back, scoring four of the final five goals of the half to knot the score at 6-6 at the break. Shuck and Kucharski each scored two goals during the run to bring the Hens back. Delaware took the advantage in the second half, scoring three of the first four goals as tallies by Kucharski, Lindsey Greer (Hammond/Laurel, MD) and Kron gave UD a 9-7 lead with 13:14 remaining. Hofstra's only goal in the run snapped a scoreless streak of nearly 27 minutes. Hofstra later cut the lead to 9-8 on a goal by Marshall with 7:58, but the Hens held the Pride in check the rest of the way, adding some insurance as Zane scored twice in the final six minutes of play to put the game away. Delaware, which did not qualify for the CAA Tournament, will return to action April 24 at Temple.
