University ran away with a 14-5 Colonial Athletic
Association women's lacrosse victory over host University of
Delaware Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
James Madison (4-4, 3-2), the defending
CAA champion and winner of the league title three of the
last five years, snapped a two-game losing streak and downed
the Blue Hens for the sixth time in the last seven meetings.
Delaware (2-3, 1-3 CAA) lost its second straight game
despite a career-high three goals from junior Nikki
Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) and two goals
from leading scorer, senior Ashley Moderacki
(Haverford/Havertown, PA).
Delaware takes to the road for the next
four games beginning with two games at South Bend, IN.
Delaware will take on Ohio State Monday followed by a
meeting with host Notre Dame on Tuesday.
James Madison, which outshot Delaware
29-17, scored the first five goals of the game in the first
13 minutes, two each by Decker and Molloy, to take control
early.
Delaware did not get a shot on goal until
the 18 minute mark and did not score until the 12:38 mark on
a goal by Kucharski. But James Madison reeled off four
straight goals, two each by Decker and Staedt, to go up 9-1
with 3:44 left before halftime.
The Blue Hens rallied as Kucharski and
Moderacki each scored in the final minutes of the opening
half to cut the JMU halftime margin to 9-3. When Moderacki
scored the first goal of the second stanza three minutes in,
the Hens had narrowed the lead to 9-4.
But the Dukes put the game away with
three straight goals by Staedt, Decker, and Jess Brownridge
over the next 10 minutes to go up 12-4. The Hens managed
just one more goal in the half when Kucharski scored with
10:12 remaining to cut the lead to 12-5.
Moderacki, coming off a career-high six
goals in Wednesday's CAA loss to Towson, upped her career
point total to 92, leaving her just eight shy of becoming
the 23rd player in UD history to reach 100 points. Delaware
senior Corinne Shuck was held without a goal, snapping her
streak of five straight games with at least two goals.
