NOTRE DAME, IND -- Eleanor Weille
scored her only goal of the game with 3:40 left to break a
7-7 tie and Lauren Fischer scored in the final minute as No.
14 ranked Notre Dame edged the University of Delaware 9-7 in
a non-league women's lacrosse game Tuesday at Meyo
Field.
The loss was the fourth straight setback
for the Blue Hens, including three by two goals or less. The
Hens, who dropped a 12-11 verdict to No. 20 Ohio State on
Monday at Notre Dame, fell to 2-5 on the season while the
Fighting Irish improved to 5-1.
Delaware will return to action Saturday
when the Blue Hens travel to No. 17 ranked William &
Mary for a Colonial Athletic Association game. The Tribe
will be the Hens' fourth straight Top 20
opponent.
Senior Ashley Moderacki
(Haverford/Havertown, PA) scored a team-high three goals
while senior Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD),
who scored six on Monday vs. Ohio State, added two goals.
Freshman Lindsey Greer (Hammond/Laurel, MD) and
junior Morgan Clute (Loch Raven/Towson, MD) recorded
the other two Delaware goals. Senior goalkeeper Laurie
Tortorelli (Haverford/Havertown, PA) kept the Blue Hens
in the game, recording 15 saves.
Notre Dame got three goals each from
Fischer and Danielle Shearer while Natalie Loftus added two
goals. Loftus, Shearer, and Weille each notched an assist on
the afternoon.
The hard-fought game featured seven ties
and the lead never wavered by more than one goal.
Notre Dame took a 4-3 lead at halftime as
Shearer scored her second goal of the game with 8:46 left in
the stanza. Delaware had tied the game on a goal by
Moderacki just two minutes earlier.
The Blue Hens never held the lead in the
second half, but tied the score four different times with
Shuck scoring two minutes into the second half for a 4-4
tie, Moderacki scoring at the 23:31 mark for a 5-5 deadlock,
Shuck scoring at 20:00 to forge a 6-6 tie, and Moderacki
scoring her third goal with 8:17 to tie the score for the
final time at 7-7.
The score remained tied until the 3:40
mark when Weille took a pass from Loftus and scored past
Tortorelli for what proved to be the game winner. Fischer
scored her third goal of the game with just 25 seconds
remaining to ice the victory.
