Monarchs Strike Early to Down Blue Hens in CAA Play

NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion scored 10 unanswered goals to build a big 10-1 halftime lead and never looked back as the No. 16 ranked Monarchs downed the University of Delaware 14-10 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse game Saturday at Foreman Field.

The unranked Blue Hens, who opened the season with an 18-2 CAA win over Drexel in their season opener last week, fell to 1-1 (1-1 CAA) despite a spirited rally in the second half. Old Dominion, which got five goals from Jennifer Heister and a goal and six assists from Suzanne Wosczyna, improved to 2-1 (1-0 CAA). The Monarchs downed the Hens for the second straight year.

Senior All-American attack candidate Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA) led the Blue Hens with three goals while Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) scored three goals for the second straight game, Michelle Campolettano (St. Anthony's/Massapequa Park, NY) tallied twice, and Nikki Kucharski (Cherry Creek/Englewood, CO) scored a goal and dished out Delaware's two assists.

Delaware will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Rutgers University at Rullo Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

It all started out well for the Blue Hens as Moderacki started the scoring just 53 seconds into the game with a goal for a 1-0 Blue Hen lead. But ODU controlled the rest of the half, scoring the next 10 goals to take a 10-1 lead into intermission. Janine Rodriguez and Danielle Hensil each scored three of their four goals for the game in the first half and Heister also tallied three times to lead the Monarchs.

But Delaware refused to give up despite the nine-goal deficit at the half. The Hens scored four of the first five goals of the second half, two by Shuck, to cut the lead to 11-5 with 25:15 left to play. After ODU built that lead back to 13-5, Delaware scored four straight goals to cut the lead to 13-9 with 12:41 remaining. But ODU came back with a goal by Heister less than a minute later and the Hens could never get closer.
