Freshman Erin Edell Scores Game-Winner in Final Minutes to Lead Hens

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman midfielder Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD HS) scored her first collegiate goal with 1:56 left to break the game's eighth tie and sent the University of Delaware to an 11-10 non-league women's lacrosse victory over Rutgers University Wednesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Edell, the daughter of former University of Maryland men's lacrosse head coach Dick Edell, scored on a free position goal to put the Hens ahead for good and Delaware ran out the clock to improve to 2-1 on the season. Rutgers, which had gained its first lead of the day midway through the second half, dropped its second straight to fall to 1-3. Delaware downed the Scarlet Knights for the third straight year.

Delaware senior attack All-American candidate Ashley Moderacki (Haverford/Havertown, PA) netted a career-high five goals and senior midfielder Corinne Shuck (Broadneck/Annapolis, MD) had her fourth straight multiple goal game over two seasons with two goals and an assist to lead the Blue Hens. Edell added an assist and Michelle Campolettano had one goal and one assist to lead the UD attack. Moderacki has scored a team-high 10 goals in three games this season. UD goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli posted seven saves in goal.

Rutgers got three goals from Missy Mosey and two each from Susan Duccilli, Kate Slotman, and Cali Wojdyla. Duccilli also added an assist. Rutgers goalkeeper Lauren Gulotta posted 13 saves in the loss.

The closely-fought contest featured eight ties, including six in the second half, and neither team ever led by more than three goals. Rutgers gained its only lead of the day with 14:59 remaining when Wojdyla scored her second goal in a span of one minute and 13 seconds to go up 8-7. But Delaware came back on goals by Moderacki and Nikki Kucharski to regain the advantage at 9-8 with 7:55 left.

Slotman tied the game at 9-9 33 seconds later before Campolettano answered for UD with her only goal of the game with 6:40 left. Duccilli came right back for Rutgers to knot the game for the final time at 10-10 with 5:02 left. Neither team scored again until Edell's game-winner with just under two minutes remaining. Rutgers gained possession in the final minute, but couldn't get a shot on goal.

Moderacki helped the Blue Hens jump out to their biggest lead of the game at 5-2 when she scored four straight goals, the last with 6:41 left before halftime. But Rutgers came back as Missy Mosey scored two goals in the final 2:36 of the half, including one with just seconds left before intermission to cut the lead to 5-4.

Delaware will return to action Mar. 20 when it hosts Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson at 7 p.m.
