James Madison
Overpowers Hens in Battle for Second Place in
CAA
Diana Hall
(4) scored a goal for the Blue
Hens
|
NEWARK, DE-- Lisa Staedt scored
four goals and Carrie Martell added three as No. 8 James
Madison knocked off the University of Delaware, 15-3, Friday
night at Rullo Stadium. With the win, James Madison takes
over sole possession of second place in the Colonial
Athletic Association.
Gail Decker and Brooke McKenzie each
netted two goals for the Dukes, who defeated the Blue hens
(7-7, 4-2 CAA) for the seventh time in their last eight
meetings.
The University of Delaware received goals
from senior Nikki Kucharski, junior Shannon
Kron, and sophomore Diana Hall.
Decker and Staedt scored 11 seconds apart
early in the first half to give James Madison (10-4, 5-1
CAA) a 2-0 lead. Kron cut the deficit to 2-1 before the
Dukes reeled off the next four goals - two by McKenzie, one
by Staedt and one by Martell - to give JMU a 6-1 lead. Hall
scored with 1:31 remaining in the half to make it a 6-2 game
at halftime.
James Madison scored the first nine goals
of the second half - highlighted by two from Staedt - to
open up a 15-2 lead before Kucharski scored a late goal for
the Hens.
Delaware freshman goalkeeper Patrice
Hughes recorded five saves on 23 shots before being
relieved by sophomore Lauren Burtch, who made two
saves on seven shots. Amy Altig started for James Madison
and recorded seven saves on 16 shots.
The Blue Hens conclude the home portion
of their 2003 season on Sunday when they take on CAA rival
George Mason. Seniors Kucharski, Kateri Linville and
Morgan Clute will be honored in a pre-game ceremony
for their contributions to the Delaware lacrosse program.
If Delaware wins, it will clinch the No.
3 seed in next weekend's CAA Tournament in Norfolk, VA, on
the campus of Old Dominion. If Delaware loses, it will fall
into a three-way tie with both George Mason and Hofstra. In
that situation, CAA commissioner Tom Yeager would determine
which teams qualify for the CAA Championships as the third
and fourth seeds via coin flip.
Game time is set for 1 p.m.
