Blue Hens Fall in Battle for First Place in CAA

NORFOLK, VA -- Melody Shotwell scored four goals and three other Monarchs tallied two each as No. 18 ranked Old Dominion University downed the University of Delaware, 12-11, in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field.

Junior Libby Pforr scored four goals for the second consecutive game to lead the Blue Hens (7-6, 4-1 CAA), who entered the contest in a first-place tie with the Monarchs. Old Dominion improved to 10-3, 6-0 CAA.

Pforr scored back-to-back goals as Delaware opened the game 2-1 within the first five minutes of action. From there, the Lady Monarchs went on to score four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead with 8:44 remaining. During that span, Shotwell netted two of her four goals, while Old Dominion junior Suzanne Wosczyna and senior Danielle Hensil each scored on free position shots.

During the remaining minutes of the first half both teams traveled up and down the field with no success until Delaware sophomore Erin Edell found the back of the Lady Monarch net with 24 seconds remaining as Old Dominion entered the half up 5-3.

Pforr struck again in the early minutes of the second half to pull Delaware within one, 5-4, with 28:21 remaining on the clock. However once again, the Lady Monarchs would go on a tear keeping the Blue Hen offense at bay while scoring four answered goals for a 8-4 advantage with just over 20 minutes remaining. Shotwell would add in her third goal of the afternoon, Hensil her second, and junior Janine Rodriguez recorded back-to-back tallies.

With Old Dominion leading 12-8, Delaware would score the game's final three goals and pull within one, 12-11, with 2:05 remaining in regulation off a Kristin Cellucci goal. Delaware had several opportunities to tie the game in the final moments, controlling the final draw and Blue Hen leading scorer Nikki Kucharski awarded a free position shot on the Lady Monarch net. However, the Lady Monarch defense held tight and rookie netminder Michelle Gannon came up with a critical save to help preserve

Edell scored twice for Delaware and junior Shannon Kron also notched two goals for the Blue Hens, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

Freshman goalkeeper Patrice Hughes made nine saves in the loss while Michelle Gannon made 14 for Old Dominion.

The Blue Hens return to action this Friday when they take on James Madison at Rullo Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
