St. Mary's 7 February 28, 2004 Blue Hens Win Season Opener Behind Edell's Three Goals EMMITSBURG, MD -- Erin Edell (right) had three goals and Shannon Kron, Michelle Campolettano and Jenny Diana each had two goals and an assist to lead the University of Delaware to an 11-7 season-opening victory over Mount St. Mary's in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 9:50 and held on for a 4-1 lead at halftime as Edell, a junior from Glenelg, MD, scored twice. Delaware blew the game open with four goals in a span of 2:14 in the second half to give the Blue Hens a 9-3 lead. Kron, a senior from Baltimore, MD, scored both of her goals in that run. The Mountaineers closed to within 9-5 before Diana and Edell scored their second and third goals of the day, respectively, to give Delaware a comfortable 11-5 lead with 8:42 to play. Katie Simons had three goals for Mount St. Mary's in a losing effort. Sophomore Patrice Hughes picked up the win in net for Delaware. The Springfield, PA native recorded eight saves. Delaware outshot Mt. St. Mary's, 32-20, and had a 28-14 advantage in ground balls. Delaware will host Penn in the home opener for the Blue Hens on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
