Delaware 11, #17 Penn State 10 (OT) May 8, 2004 Blue Hens Upset No. 17 Nittany Lions; Campolettano Scores Game-winner in Overtime Game Boxscore NEWARK, DE - Senior attack Michelle Campolettano (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from junior midfielder Diana Hall (Clifton, VA/Centreville) with 1:35 to go in overtime as the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team upset 17th-ranked Penn State, 11-10, at Rullo Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens, who beat their first Top 20 opponent since downing No. 19 George Mason, 8-7, on April 11, 2002, concluded the 2004 season with a 6-10 record after winning their last two contests while the Nittany Lions fell to 6-11. The tight contest saw five ties and five lead changes in the second half before the Hens prevailed. Freshman attack Jenny Diana (Burke, VA/Robinson), a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, led Blue Hens with three goals while sophomore Kristin Cellucci (at right - Springfield, PA/Springfield) added two goals in the win. Diana finishes the season as the Blue Hens' points leader with 44 (38 goals, six assists), marking the first time a freshman has led the team in scoring since UD all-time scoring leader Karen Emas did so in her 1981 rookie campaign. Katie Jeschke scored four goals and Lori Havrilla notched three goals and one assist for Penn State. Penn State opened the scoring in overtime as Shari Maslin scored 1:08 into the period to give the Nittany Lions a 10-9 lead. However, Delaware rallied off two scores as junior Laura Libertini (Parkton, MD/Mt. de Sales) notched the game-tying goal off an assist from senior Shannon Kron (Baltimore, MD/Maryvale Prep) with 2:04 to play in the period before Campolettano's score at 1:35 gave the Blue Hens the 11-10 final. Despite trailing 6-5 entering the second half, the Blue Hens quickly tied the game for the first time as Cellucci scored at 28:26. Diana followed Cellucci's score with a tally off a free position shot to give the Blue Hens their first lead of the day at 7-6 with 26:54 left. Havrilla responded for Penn State with two scores to put the Nittany Lions up 8-7 with 21:30 to play in the stanza. Diana responded at 19:09 to tie the game at 8-8 and junior Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/Forest Hill) tallied her first goal of the afternoon at 17:56 to give the Hens a 9-8 advantage but Jeschke scored the final goal of regulation at 13:50, sending the game to overtime tied 9-9. Penn State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead nine minutes into the first half. Cellucci registered Delaware's first points of the day at 19:42 to cut the lead to 3-1 but Jeschke and Maslin both found the back of the net to extend the Nittany Lion lead to 5-1 at 14:41. Senior Becky Zane (Glen Mills, PA/Garnett Valley) and junior Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/Glenelg) cut the Penn State lead to 5-3 with scores at 13:55 and 11:57, respectively. Kristen Burke tallied Penn State's final goal of the half at 6:40 before Delaware closed out the half on a two-goal run to end the first half trailing just 6-5. Delaware goalkeeper Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA) registered the win for the Blue Hens, making 11 saves in nearly 48 minutes of action in relief of starter Lauren Burtch. Lee Tortorelli, a National Player of the Year candidate, played the entire game and stopped 15 shots for Penn State.
