Rutgers 12, Delaware 8 March 6, 2004 Blue Hens Can't Hold on to Halftime Lead, Fall to Knights Game Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held a one-goal advantage at halftime, but Rutgers scored five straight goals to open the second half and moved on to a 12-8 non-league women's lacrosse victory over the Blue Hens Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens, who let a 10-5 second half lead slip away in Wednesday's 15-12 setback to Pennsylvania, fell to 1-2 on the season despite outshooting the Scarlet Knights 37-32. Kristin Cellucci had her second straight multiple goal game with two goals and one assist while freshman Jenny Diana (right) scored twice and Becky Zane and Katie Muth each scored a goal and contributed an assist for the Hens. Rutgers improved to 2-1 on the season as Katie Batiuk scored three goals and dished out two assists, Lindsay Rising added three goals, and Emily Widrick and Anne Marchitello recorded two goals each. Goalkeeper Lyndsey Feldman recorded 19 saves. The Scarlet Knights connected on five of six free position attempts for the game. Delaware, which was bidding to give head coach Denise Wescott her 100th career victory with the Blue Hens, started out strong, jumping out to a 4-1 lead midway through the opening half. After Batiuk started the scoring for Rutgers just 1:22 into the game, Delaware responded with two goals from Cellucci and one each from Shannon Kron and Muth for the 4-1 lead. Diana scored her first goal of the game with 1:39 left in the opening half to send the Hens into halftime holding a 5-4 advantage. But the second half belonged to the Scarlet Knights as they came out strong, scoring four goals in the first five minutes and adding a fifth unanswered goal with 16:45 remaining to take control at 9-5. Rising scored twice during the run with Batiuk scoring once and assisting on another goal i n the pivotal stretch. The 16-minute goal drought ended for the Hens with 16:21 left to play when Zane scored and Erin Edell followed just 12 seconds later with another goal to pull the Hens to within 9-7. But Rutgers answered with two straight of its own on scores by Rising and Marchitello to up the lead back to four at 11-7. Diana's second goal with 12:17 remaining cut the lead to 11-8, but that was all the Hens could manage the rest of the way.
