Jenny Diana (Burke, VA) tied a career-high with five
goals, including the game-winning goal with 35 secondsleft
in the game, to send the University of Delaware women's
lacrosse team to a narrow 11-10 non-conference victory over
Temple Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia.
Diana, tallying five goals in the second
straight game, lead the Blue Hens while senior Shannon
Kron (Baltimore, MD/Maryvale Prep) dished out a
game-high three assists. Corey Leader paced the Owls with
four goals and one assist.
The Blue Hens improved to 5-10 with the
win in a game which featured four ties and five lead-changes
while the Owls dropped to 7-7 on the season.
Temple took an early 1-0 advantage over
the Blue Hens just 48 seconds into the game, but the junior
Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/Glenelg), senior Becky
Zane (Glen Mills, PA/Garnett Valley), and Diana each
scored to give Delaware a 3-1 lead with 11:59 remaining in
the first half. Leader responded with a score for the Owls,
however Diana and sophomore Kristen Cellucci
(Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored at 2:09 and 1:22
respectively to send the Blue Hens to halftime with a 5-2
edge.

Junior Lauren Burtch made a
career-high 14 saves in the win.

Leader began the second half with two
quick scores to cut the Delaware lead to 5-4, just 1:29 into
the stanza. Edell found the back of the net off an assist
from Kron at 27:10 but Johna Capaldo and Casey Cech both
scored for the Owls to tie the game, 6-6, at 24:00. Diana
scored two straight goals to give the Hens a two-goal lead,
8-6, with 21:12 remaining.
The Owls responded with three unanswered
goals from Cech, Capaldo and Leader to take a 9-8 edge with
8:18 to play in regulation. Delaware took a 10-9 lead with
6:46 to go after Cellucci and senior Michelle
Campolettano (Massapequa Park, NY/St. Anthony's) each
notched a goal. Tiffany Pulaski gave Temple its final tie of
the game at 4:03 but Diana managed to register her fifth
goal of the game with just 35 seconds to play to send the
Hens to the 11-10 final.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Burtch
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made a career-high 14 saves in
just her second start of the season. Megan McLouth made 18
saves for the Owls.
Temple had the advantage in shots, 35-33,
and groundballs, 38-30, while Delaware held the edge in draw
controls, 13-9.
Delaware will conclude its 2004 season in
17 days as it hosts the Penn State Nittany Lions on
Saturday, May 8 at Rullo Stadium at 1 p.m.
