Hens Let Early Lead Slip Away as Hofstra
Rallies for 11-9 Win in Battle of Top 20

(April 3, 2005) -- The No. 15 University
of Delaware women's lacrosse team let a
five-goal lead slip away as it fell to No.
10 Hofstra by a score of 11-9 in Colonial
Athletic Association action on Sunday
afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware
(4-4, 1-2 CAA) dropped its second straight
CAA contest despite receiving two goals
apiece from Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/
Glenelg-right), Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/
Forest Hill), and Casey McCrudden
(Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern). Sophomore Laura
Miller (Morton, PA/ Ridley/ Penn State)
recorded two assists on the afternoon
while Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/
Springfield) made seven saves in net for
the Blue Hens.
Hofstra
(10-1, 3-0 CAA) is off to the best start
in school history and remained the only
team in Division I women's lacrosse to not
allow an opponent to score 10 goals in a
game. The Pride received two goals each
from Kim Hillier, Becky Thorn, Tara
Buecker, and Caitlin Connolly. Hillier
also recorded two assists while Maisie
Osteen and Lisa Papa split time in goal
making four saves combined.
Delaware
opened the game with a 4-0 run before
Hofstra scored its first goal. The Blue
Hens added two more goals to up their
lead, 6-1 with 9:34 remaining in the first
half. Hofstra then entered Papa into the
game, replacing Osteen in net and the
momentum seemed to swing in the Pride's
favor as it scored the final four goals of
the half to cut the defecit to 6-5 at
intermission.
The two
teams traded goals over the first six
minutes of the second half to make the
score 8-7 before the Pride scored three
unanswered goals to take the lead at 10-8.
During that stretch for the Pride,
Connolly scored both of the goals, tying
the game first at 7-7 and then again at
8-8. McCrudden made it a one-goal game at
10-9 with her second goal of the day at
2:26 but that was as close as the Blue
Hens would get as Hofstra added one more
goal in the closing seconds for the final
margin. Buecker scored both of her goals
in the final minutes to help give the
Pride the win.
Delaware
held a slight advantage in shots at 24-23
while Hofstra held an advantage in
groundballs at 16-14.
The Blue
Hens will take to the road as they travel
to CAA foe James Madison on Friday, April
8 for a 4 p.m. game.
