No. 12 Hofstra Pulls Away To Defeat 16th-Ranked Delaware, 9-4, In CAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Tara Buecker scored four goals during a Hofstra five-goal run in the second half as the No. 12 Pride women's lacrosse team pulled away to post a 9-4 win over the 16th-ranked University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Semifinals.

Fourth-seeded Delaware, which was making its first appearance in the CAA Tournament and its first appearance in a conference tournament since 2001, fell to 8-7 on the season. Top-seeded Hofstra, which defated Delaware, 11-9, on April 3 in the teams' regular season meeting, improved to 14-3 and will face the winner of the second semfinal between George Mason and Towson Sunday in the championship game.

Kim Hillier, who tied for the team lead with Buecker by scoring four goals, gave the Pride the early lead by scoring on a free position shot with 20:39 remaining in the first half, but Delaware freshman attacker Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) -above- tied the game 42 seconds later when she scored an unassisted goal.

Bridget Eder put Hofstra back on top with an unassisted goal 11 seconds later, but Blue Hen senior midfielder Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/Glenelg) made it a 2-2 game by scoring an unassisted goal with 16:14 left in the half. However Hillier scored an unassisted goal at the 10:21 mark and added a goal off an assist from Jill Wienecke with 7:21 remaining to give the Pride a 4-2 lead at the half.

McCrudden, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team on Friday, scored off an assist from Edell, a First Team All-CAA selection, with 26:23 remaining in the game to bring the Blue Hens within one, but Hofstra answered with a 5-0 run over the next 22 minutes to pull away.

Buecker ignited the rally by scoring off an assist from Eder just 18 seconds after McCrudden's goal, and Eder found Hillier for a goal at the 22:14 mark to put Hofstra up 6-3. Bucker then scored a pair of free position goals with 19:07 left and 6:34 remaining before she closed the run with an unassisted goal at the 4:18 mark to make it a 9-3 game.

Freshman defender Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), who was also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team on Friday, scored off a feed from junior attacker Megan Hager (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) with 3:40 on the clock to bring the Blue Hens within five, but Delaware could not get closer.

Blue Hen junior goalkeeper Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/Springfield) made eight saves in the Delaware goal, while Lisa Papa stopped 10 shots for the Pride. Delaware held a 27-24 advantage in ground balls and a 9-6 edge in draw controls, while Hofstra held a slight 23-22 edge in shots.

Delaware concludes its regular season next Saturday with a 12 noon game at Penn State.
