Blue Hen Rally Comes Up Short as Delaware Falls to Loyola 10-8 in Home Opener

NEWARK, DE -- Jenny Diana (right), Erin Edell, and Laura Miller each scored two goals for the University of Delaware but the Blue Hens' late comeback fell short in a 10-8 non-league women's lacrosse setback to Loyola in the 2005 home opener Thursday night.

No. 19 ranked Delaware, which opened the season under first-year head coach Kim Ciarrocca Saturday with a 12-9 win at Rutgers, fell behind by five goals late in the game against Loyola but rallied to score the game's final three goals before time ran out. No. 11 ranked Loyola snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 2-2.

Diana, Delaware's leading goal-scorer as a freshman in 2004 with 38, also added an assist while Megan Hager added a goal and an assist and Katie Muth scored once. The Hens held a 27-21 advantage in shots and a 24-19 margin in groundballs but still came up on the short end of the score.

Loyola, which downed Delaware for the 11th straight time and for the 19th time in the team's last 20 meetings, got three goals from Kate McHarg while Kate Filippelli scored twice and Rachel Shuck added a goal and a game-high three assists.

McHarg scored twice in the first six minutes of the contest as Loyola jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead and never looked back. Delaware got its only first-half goal on a score by Miller with 22:58 remaining.

The teams traded goals for the first 13 minutes of the second half with the Greyhounds going up 8-3 on a goal by Chrissy Nicolaus with 17:18 remaining.

But Delaware responded with consecutive goals from Hager and Edell to cut the lead to 8-5 with 13:02 to go. Loyola answered with back-to-back goals from Sydney Greene and McHarg to push the lead back up to five at 10-5.

Delaware came back with a furious rally that fell just short. Diana scored with 7:42 left, Muth tallied at the 4:50 mark, and Diana scored again with 45 seconds left to cut the lead to 10-8 but Loyola won the next draw and ran out the clock for the win.
