Falls to Penn, 12-11
PHILADELPHIA,
PA (March 22, 2005) - The No. 20
University of Delaware women's lacrosse
team held a one-goal lead at halftime but
was unable to sustain that lead as No. 14
University of Pennsylvania picked up the
12-11 win at Franklin Field in
Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.
Delaware
(3-2) received two goals apiece from Laura
Libertini (Parkton, MD/ Mt. de
Sales-right), Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/
Glenelg), Katie Muth (Ellicott City, MD/
Seton Keough), Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/
Forest Hill), and Colonial Athletic
Association Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the
Week Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/
Eastern). Libertini also added two assists
on the afternoon while Patrice Hughes
(Springfield, PA/ Springfield) made eight
saves between the pipes for the Blue
Hens.
Penn (4-1)
received three goals from Katie Spofford
and Rachel Mason while Emily Cochran and
Chrissy Muller each added two goals
apiece. Cochran tallied two assists on the
afternoon while Liz Lorelli made nine
saves in net for the Quakers.
Delaware
held early leads of 3-1 and 5-3 in the
game as the two teams proceeded to trade
goals over the next six minutes. The Blue
Hens then received back to back goals to
take the 8-6 lead with 2:45 left in the
half before allowing the Quakers the last
goal of the half at 1:23.
The Blue
Hens scored the first goal of the second
half to go up 9-7 before Penn scored three
out of the next four goals to tie the game
at 10-10 with 15:47. Delaware scored its
last goal of the game at 11:54 off a free
position shot. Penn then scored two more
goals including the game winner with 35
seconds remaining to secure the
victory.
The two
teams recorded 21 shots each while Penn
held a 16-7 advantage in ground
balls.
The Blue
Hens will return to action on Friday night
when they open up their Colonial Athletic
Association schedule by hosting Towson at
7 p.m.
