Delaware Women's Lacrosse Opens Ciarrocca Era With 12-9 Wins over Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Erin Edell (Glenelg, MD/ Glenelg-right) notched her sixth career hat trick as the number 19 ranked University of Delaware women's lacrosse team opened its 2005 season with a 12-9 win at Rutgers University on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens (1-0) gave new head coach Kim Ciarrocca the win in her head coaching debut at Delaware.

Ciarrocca comes to Delaware having spent the last 12 years at Temple University and lead her Owls' teams to the NCAA tournament in seven of the last nine years. Delaware is coming off a 6-10 mark last year and four straight losing seasons but won its season opener for the second straight year.

Rutgers scored the first goal of the game before Edell scored her first goal of the year and sophomore transfer Laura Miller (Morton, PA / Ridley/ Penn State) contributed her first goal to put the Blue Hens up 2-1. Rutgers tied the score at 2-2 with 15:46 on the clock as Emily Widrick scored her second goal of the game but that was the last time the Scarlet Knights would see the score tied in the contest.

Katie Hogan ( Farmingdale, NY/ Farmingdale) and Katie Muth (Ellicott City, MD/ Seton Keough) scored goals that were separated by just 10 seconds to put Delaware up 4-2 and that was a lead the Blue Hens would not relinquish.

Edell and Hogan added their second goals of the game while Jenny Diana ( Burke, VA/ Robinson) found the net for the first time this year as Delaware took a 7-5 lead at intermission.

Edell scored her third goal of the game just under three minutes into the second half and Becky Rausa (Falllston, MD/Forest Hill) followed that goal less than a minute later with her first goal of the season. Diana scored her second goal of the game and Miller added her second goal of the game at 13:49 to make it 11-7. Rutgers added two goals to cut the lead to two before freshman Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern ) scored with three seconds remaining for the final tally.

Delaware outshot Rutgers 27-23 for the game while the Scarlet Knights held a 14-9 advantage in groundballs. Delaware's Patrice Hughes ( Springfield, PA/ Springfield) made eight saves in the game while her counterpart Lyndsey Feldman was forced to make nine saves for the Scarlet Knights.

The Blue Hens will make their home debut on Thursday night, March 10 when they host Loyola (MD). Game time at Rullo Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
