Blue Hens Clinch CAA Tournament Berth with 13-8 Win over No. 15 William & Mary

NEWARK, DE (April 17, 2005) -- The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team clinched its first conference tournament berth since 2001 with a 13-8 upset win over No. 15 William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens have now three of their last four contests.

The Blue Hens under the direction of first-year head coach Kim Ciarrocca will be making their first ever appearance in the CAA tournament, in their fourth year in the CAA. Delaware last competed in the post-season in 2001 when it was a member of the America East Conference. The CAA Tournament will be held the weekend of April 29 with the site to be determined by the outcome of today's other CAA games.

The Blue Hens (7-5, 4-3 CAA) received two goals and an assist apiece from junior Kristin Cellucci (Springfield, PA/ Springfield), freshman Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, NJ/ Eastern), and senior Becky Rausa (Fallston, MD/ Forest Hill). Sophomores Stephanie McQuade (Doylestown, PA/ C.B. West) and Laura Miller (Morton, PA/ Ridley-at right) each added two goals apiece on the afternoon while junior Patrice Hughes (Springfield, PA/ Springfield) made seven saves in net for the Blue Hens.

William & Mary (6-8, 3-3 CAA) dropped its second straight contest and was knocked out of post-season contention with the loss despite receiving three goals and an assist from Colleen Dalon while Emily Vitrano added two goals. Debby Petracca made seven saves between the pipes for the Tribe.

The first six minutes of the game went back and forth as the two teams traded goals with William & Mary taking a 3-2 lead with 24:36 to go. Delaware then went on a 4-0 run over the next six minutes including two goals in that stretch from Miller to take a 6-3 lead. William & Mary answered right back with two goals of their own in less than a minute, to make the score 6-5 with 12:07 remaining in the first half. Delaware scored three of the final four goals in the half to take a 9-6 lead at intermission.

The Blue Hens held an 11-6 lead with 18:42 to go in the game, before the Tribe got two goals of its own to make it a three goal game. Delaware's McQuade scored her two goals in the final five minutes to help secure the victory.

William & Mary held a 29-23 advantage in shots while Delaware held a 21-15 advantage in groundballs.

The Blue Hens will return home on Wednesday, April 20 when they host Temple in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
