NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware junior Katie Muth (at right) dished out two assists and scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:38 left in the second overtime period, to lead the Blue Hens to a thrilling 9-8 women's lacrosse win over Brown Sunday at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens (3-3), who have had four games decided by one goal this season, got another outstanding effort from sophomore Jenny Diana who notched three goals for her third hat trick of the season. Senior Kristin Cellucci tied her season-high with two goals and freshman Debbie Sloan notched one goal and one assist in the win. Senior Megan Hager dished out two assists while freshman Alexis Curcio added one goal and sophomore Casey McCrudden added an assist, which was the game-winning assist.
Brown’s Kate Staley, who Delaware’s Jess Cervaney stopped on a breakaway at 2:56 in the second overtime to keep the score tied before Muth scored the game-winner with 1:38 remaining off of an assist from McCrudden, led the Bears (2-3) with three goals and one assist.
Delaware took a 2-0 lead with 19:20 remaining in the first half on back-to-back goals by Diana and Cellucci. Brown scored five unanswered goals by Mimi DeTolla, Amie Biros, Staley, Krystina DeLuca, and Bethany Buzzell to give the Bears a 5-2 lead just before halftime.
Buzzell added one more goal 2:54 into the second half to give Brown a 6-2 lead. Delaware’s Curcio took a pass from Muth at the 26:27 mark to cut the lead to 6-3 in favor of the Bears. Diana added two straight goals at 23:19 and 43 seconds later to bring Delaware to within one before Muth tied the score, 6-6, at 21:20 on a free position shot.
Staley scored an unassisted goal at 19:53 to give Brown the 7-6 advantage before Sloan evened the score at 7-7 on an unassisted goal 43 seconds later. Cellucci put the Hens up 8-7 at the 11:14 mark on a pass from Hager. Brown continued to battle when DeLuca scored with 5:06 remaining in regulation to tie the score for the fourth time of the day at 8-8 and to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime period remained scoreless for Delaware and Brown.
Cervaney made 10 saves in the cage for the Blue Hens, who are appearing in their second overtime game this season, while Brown’s Melissa King made 13 saves.
The Blue Hens, who are coming off a 10-9 win over #17 Penn, will open conference play when they travel to Towson University on Friday, March 24 for a 7 p.m. game. This will start a five-game road trip for the Blue Hens. Boxscore
